Squirrels may appear cute, but if you have a garden and plant different fruits and veggies, they can be a nuisance. Squirrels enjoy picking at practically any food they come across, so it’s likely that they’ll cause problems in your garden. So why not build a feeder and feed them yourself rather than letting them wander through your garden. They will be able to eat the food they desire as a result, increasing the likelihood that they won’t enter your yard. Also, you’ll get to enjoy a little bit of amusement by watching the adorable little squirrel eat at the feeder.

You may make your own squirrel feeder using our how-to guide. You will need the following supplies to do that:

Saw

Sandpaper

Compass

Board for cedar fence (6 ft. 1 inch by 6 inches)

Gallon-sized glass jar

Deck screws made of galvanized steel (two 1/2 inch and one 5/8 inch)

Step 1

A fence board’s portion is what you need. Ideally, this would be 16 inches long. This will act as the framework.

Step 2

We’ll work on installing the jar holder. As a result, you must trace the jar’s curve on a portion of the remaining fence board. Make sure you allow at least an inch between the board’s lowest point and the curve’s lowest point. The next step is to use the saw to cut following the lines you have drawn. Check to see sure the jar fits well. Sandpaper can then be used to smooth it out.

Step 3

Support the jar now so the squirrel can get inside. A board measuring 8 inches by 5 1/2 inches must be cut. Trace the jar’s circle onto the cut piece once again using the jar as a guide. Use the saw to cut it, then sandpaper to smooth it out. The squirrel will be able to access the jar with ease as a result.

Step 4

Cut two pieces of the remaining fence board that measure 9 1/4 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The squirrel’s access to the feeder will be here. Make a hole about 3 inches in diameter in each of these two cut pieces. The squirrel can so access the feeder without difficulty from either side. These two boards’ tops should be cut as a support so that one end is 9 1/4 inches long and the other side is 8 inches, sort of slanted. This is attached to the 8-inch portion of the board that was cut in Step 3 in this manner.

The next step is to cut a second 8 by 5 1/2-inch piece of wood board. The two boards we just cut will be protected by this as a roof.

Step 5

Now that the base will go against the tree, you must cut a piece of board that measures 16 inches by 5 1/2 inches. This piece will be screwed on to the tree.

Step 6

We now have all of our pieces cut and prepared for assembly. Screws and a compass will be necessary for your assistance. With the basis that was cut in step 1, you begin. The bottom base will be there. You screw the jar placeholder that you cut in step 2 leaving around three inches from one end. The cutout board from step 3 should be screwed into the base in accordance with the length of the jar. The jar can be correctly positioned between these two pieces of board by using this method. The two pieces of board you cut in step 4 need to be placed against the back of this piece of wood, one on either end of the baseboard to allow the squirrel to enter from either side. You’ve finished the feeder foundation in most respects.

Step 7

The base should be secured to the board piece using screws. The board is then fastened to the tree using screws, and a squirrel feeder is now complete.

Fill the jar to the brim with nuts and other foods that squirrels enjoy and watch them munch away.

How do you make a squirrel proof tray feeder?

Your feeders should be suspended at least five feet off the ground on a wire that is strung from pole to pole. String plastic Coke bottles the size of liters onto the wire on either side of the feeders to deter squirrels from doing a tightrope walking stunt. The squirrels are immediately thrown off by the plastic bottles as they approach.
